This website provides information about Pork Scratchings / Crackling / Rinds including some rather fetching Pack Pictures, these were originally listed in alphabetical order, but due to my laziness new packs will just be added at the end. See below for the HBS news section, (ir)regularly updated with all the latest Pork Scratchings news we can get.

The name of this website originates from the nick-name for pork scratchings, coined by myself and a few friends. We don't generally eat scratchings unless we are at the pub. The pub sells many types of 'bar snacks', and as we all know pork scratchings have a slight tendancy to be hairy. You can buy pork scratchings from many places, but we don't really care about that. They only 'fit our bill' if bought from the pub's bar.
Therefore, HAIRY BAR SNACKS.

We would like this site to eventually be the one stop shop for all hairy snacks that you may purchase from your local public house (The best place to eat them) bar.

We have many sections that may be of interest to you. We are endeavoring to fill the pages with as much as we can find out, but would like to take this opportunity to ask for YOUR HELP. If you find anything that might be of interest to us that we have not yet included, please let us know. Many people have submitted information and pictures, and we thank you all.

As Pork Scratchings go... It was bloody HUGE!

So far we have managed to scan in some of our Pork Scratching Packs which we have been collecting for a few years now. We have a page for our Hairy Mascot. The shop is underway, selling pork scratching tshirts, and hopefully soon you can buy some actual scratchings to take with you to poorest of pubs. There's a little bit of History, and the different names and types found throughout the world. Also there's a page where you can find out which pub sells which brand. Our links page has an extensive list of for further reading. A new Videos section. Lastly our Contact Us page, which we would love you to use, send us some pics or info!

If this thing really takes off, we will be creating the 'Hairy Bar Snack Forum' where you all can discuss everything that takes your scratchy fancy.

Thanks for visiting the site and if you are leaving us, please come back soon.

Don't loose us, bookmark us.

Lessons From The Land Of Pork Scratchings: A Miserable Yank Discovers The Secret Of Happiness In Britain by Greg Gutfeld
Greg Gutfeld was a high-achieving, slim but anxious New Yorker in therapy when he was posted to the UK to take up the position of editor of Maxim magazine. Once settled in London he had something of a cultural epiphany. Service and transport were poor and slow, food was soggy and came in tiny portions and the beer was warm. The British, he decided, viewed the world through a prism of dreariness but, despite this, they seemed to be more cheerful than his fellow countrymen, who expected to be happy on demand. After two years in the UK, Gutfeld was12 kilos heavier but a lot more content. The key to his new-found contentment lay in adopting the British attitude to life: he too had learned that having diminished expectations reaps its own rewards. His hilarious observations on British culture, rituals and peculiarities at all levels of society are an illuminating insight into the land of pubs and curry, where everyone is called 'mate' and people with pimples, wrinkles and greasy hair can get on primetime TV.

Pork Scratchings are not the same Pork Rinds even though both are snack foods made from pig skin. Pork Scratchings are heavier, harder and have a crispy layer of fat under the skin, flavoured with salt.

The consensus of opinion is that they originated in the West Midlands or Black Country. The Black Country is named after it's roots in the industrial revolution and continuing role as a centre of heavy engineering and mining which in days gone by was said to cover the area in grime and soot.

It would seem that Pork Scratchings were very much a food of the working classes with origins back in the 1800's when it was produced as part of the tradition of families keeping their own pig at home and feeding it up for slaughter.

In modern times the fine layer of hair is removed from the skin by burning, however this is not 100% effective and some pieces still have the hair attatched. This makes these snacks definately not for the faint hearted.

Butchers started selling Pork Scratchings in the 1930's, calling it Crackling (A word synonymous with pork scratchings in the UK). It was soft underneath and crunchy on top.
